The Outlaw Pad – Laminitis Treatment

Laminitis Treatment- The Outlaw Pad

Laminitis is the inflammation or swelling in the sensitive laminae. This can be caused from any number of causes. The Outlaw Pad is an open toe heart bar shoe/pad. That has been used for hundreds of years if not longer. Let’s break down the design. It offers full heel support if you look at the true laminitic or founder stance in horses they are back their heels trying to relive pain in the toe. By supporting the heel with a pad like shoe you protect the one part of the hoof that can support the horse the heel. As we move to the middle of the Outlaw Pad it has a heart bar which is a support for the frog of the foot. The frog in a normal foot allows the hoof to expand and contract to aid in blood flow. When a horse stands on its heel it compresses the frog slowing blood flow the heart bar aids in pumping blood to the frog and hoof. The open toe is an important part of the overall design. In laminitis you have swelling but limited damage as of yet. The open toe dose a few things related to the hoof. It allows the sole to expand unrestricted if there is a shoe across the toe. The sole at the toe will be compressed and cause damage such as bruising or abscesses. With expansion unrestricted it aids in blood flow without compression both in the top section circumflex artery which feeds the coronary band and the dorsal venous plexus (this is the blood supply to the sole of the hoof). The Outlaw Pad has an overall heel elevation of five degrees. Which temporary relieves the pull of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). Which attaches to the point of the coffin bone this pull can and dose cause rotation which is founder. Look at our Founder treatment page. The Outlaw Pad is designed to help the laminitic foot not reach this point of possible rotation and with veterinary care and farrier help we can limit the damage to the hoof. Laminitic Preventive Care

Laminitis is a secondary reaction to a traumatic event in a horse. Fever or sudden elevation of temperature can induce laminitis. Colic or toxin in the gut causing pain or even sever stress in the horse can bring on a case of laminitis. There are many studies showing high levels of sugar or unchecked insulin levels causing insulin shock to the system can bring on laminitis. There are cases of Cushing disease causing hormone levels to be out of balance and cause laminitis. Sever bruising to the sole or hoof can induce acute laminitis. Even over eating of grain or high protein feed causing an insulin or other shock the horses system. There are multiple reasons for the onset of laminitis. The best prevention is recognizing the signs and getting the proper veterinary and farrier care. The use of the Outlaw Pad is essential in control and recovery in acute laminitis cases. So when the horse stands it actually reduces any pressure points and reduces the chance of abscesses in the sole. The Outlaw Pad uses a five degree heel wedge to temporarily relieve the pull on the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) in the acute stage. The open toe stops compression of the sole increasing compromised blood flow and reducing the risk of bruising and abscesses in the sole of the hoof. By helping these three major areas of compression, support and elevation the Outlaw pad should be the only choice in acute laminitis.

Recommended Glue for The Outlaw Pad

Cyanoacrylate is the generic name for cyanoacrylate based fast-acting adhesives such as methyl 2-cyanoacrylate, ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate (commonly sold under trade names like SuperGlue and Krazy Glue), n-butyl cyanoacrylate (used in the veterinary glues Vetbond and LiquiVet and skin glues like Indermil and Histoacryl). 2-octyl cyanoacrylate is a medical grade glue encountered under various trade names; e.g., LiquiBand, SurgiSeal, FloraSeal, Dermabond, and Nexaband. Cyanoacrylate adhesives are sometimes known as “instant glues”. The abbreviation “CA” is commonly used for industrial grades.
